Chapter 16

Jack

I dreamed myself into Wyatt’s cabin.

These types of dreams weren’t as restful as the regular variety, but I needed a few answers. And these answers could only come via my grandfather.

Again, Wyatt sat reclined in his armchair, feet stretched out toward the heatless flames in the fireplace.

“Well,” he said. “Here we both are, alive and well. I take it we flew the coup?”

I flopped into the chair next to him. In the dream, my aches and pains were so muted, that I pretended they didn’t exist. “Sure did. Alex and Dad broke me out.”

Under his bushy mustache, Wyatt’s lips curled into a smile. “Daniel, huh? Is that right? He’s a tough cuss. I tell you, if he’d been blessed with a fraction of our abilities, there’d have been no limit to his potential. He’s a special kid.”

“Kid?” I laughed. “He’s in his forties.”

“He’ll always be a kid to me. My kid. Wish I could have seen him be a dad. I bet he was pretty great.”

“The best,” I agreed. I cleared my throat to change the subject—it wasn’t awkward at all, I swear—and said, “I have a couple questions we’re all hoping you can clear up.”

“You told them about me, did ya?” When I nodded, he made a sucking sound against his teeth. “I bet that went over just great. Alright. What have you got?”

“First, did you feel a surge of power just a bit ago? You’d have noticed it if it was possible.”

“Oh, you mean when I felt like I got lit on fire? Yeah, I noticed. One moment I’m sitting here enjoying the blaze, the next I am the fire. I figured we were having our brain hacked out. Yet here we are. I still feel it, whatever it was that hit us.”

“That would have been me absorbing the leftover power from the Catalyst’s residue.”

Wyatt whistled. “Well, I’ll be. How’d you stumble on that?”

“Turns out we’re back in Calm Waters. Gaines must have moved me when I was knocked out from one of the first surgeries. When I broke out, I found myself in the hallway where the device used to be stored. I had to take a look.”

“You were drawn there.” Wyatt made the words a statement rather than a question. He knew what was coming.

“Yes I was. And I think you know why.”

“Uh huh. I went in that room once, back when the sphere still sat there.”

“Oh, I know,” I said. “I saw it. You walked in, thought about touching it, then pulled away. Then you bailed as quick as you came in. But the Catalyst didn’t just let you leave. Not really.”

“Now how did you see that? I ain’t never shown you that memory. And I only told one person about it.”

Ah. There it was. “The Catalyst’s residue showed it to me. When you left, it connected to you. A psychic tether. Did you feel it?”

“Oh, that? Sure. From then on, no matter where I was in the world, I could close my eyes and point to it.
